FRESCOES IN THE WOMB SIX PLAYS FROM GOA

Frescoes in the Womb is a collection of plays that have their center in Goa, but often radiate out of their birthplace in to a larger world, as do the destinies of numerous people from this minuscule state of India. The collection can be seen as a sheaf of portraits that have engaged the author’s imagination: who sits Behind My Eyes? places the struggle of a woman for freedom within a fishing community. This play received an award at The Hindu /Madras Players’ Playwrights in English Contest, Special Category (1983). Playing with the Eye of the Dragon revisits an historical event that impacted generations in complex ways- the Libration of Goa from colonial rule. Kator Re Bhaji sketches the life of Abbe Faria, the pioneer Goan hypnotist, arguably one of the most interesting members of the Goan diaspora. On the Holy Trail follows the stench of greed for land in this Country’s tiniest coastal state. Ghosts at Large is a celebration of writers and artists and their invaluable legacy. Frescoes in the Womb dramatizes the visceral connection between the artist and what he or she calls home.
