In Life Stories: The Collected Stories of Maria Elsa da Rocha, a collection of 26 short stories, mostly written in the decade following 1961, Maria Elsa da Rocha depicts the Goa of her past and present. Drawing on family-lore and real-life incidents witnessed during her time as a schoolteacher, focussing on life as subjectively experienced, Rocha wrote about people from all walks of life – wealthy bhatcars and impoverished flower sellers, Divar doctors and Nanuz labourers, teachers of Marathi and Damanese soldiers, returning shippies and Bombay migrants, rebellious teenagers and wilful old ladies – but always with compassion, respect and tenderness. Fourteen of the stories featured here were collected in Vivencias Partilhadas (Third Millenium, 2005), six appeared in Goa’s erstwhile Portuguese press, and another six went unpublished during the author’s lifetime.
