The book Emergence of Mahatma Gandhi during the first global war, indeed after a successful socio-political career of two decades in South Africa. This period, in fact, is most crucial in the annals of our sub-continent. Various political developments which emerged during this period, had deep-routed effect on events in 1920s which became a torch-bearer in the later historical events. The pathway to Swaraj was a complex journey which need sacrifices of highest order during the two decades. And for all these future crucial events proper planning with disciplined mass support was very much required. The leadership of no less a leader of eminence than Mahatma Gandhi was forth coming. The historic events have been weaved in this volume. Dadabhai Naoroji, the Grand Old Man of India, had unique career during this period. He talked about the acute poverty of India under the alien rule. As congress president, his assessment of socio-economic and political condition was quite logical. The chapters are twenty in and they cover, of course with sequencewise, the khilafat, the significant role of Ali brothers, Gandhi's ideology of Hindu-Muslim unity, the emergence of Mrs.Annie Besant in 1917 when she was elected the congress president, attitude of the British Raj, the Montagu-Chelrnsford reforms having hearing on constitutional developments in India, the Rowlatt Bills and their severe opposition by the people, the tragedy at Amritsar and the role of Pandit Motilal Nehru as congress president at the Amritsar session.
